2026 Grid and Energy Storage Expansion Accelerates, Creating New Demand for High-Strength Fasteners
As global solar, wind, energy storage, and grid upgrade projects continue to advance, demand for high-strength, corrosion-resistant fasteners is growing in transmission facilities, substations, energy storage equipment, and associated steel structures. Product quality, surface treatment, dimensional stability, and batch traceability are becoming key considerations in engineering procurement.

Entering 2026, global energy infrastructure construction continues to accelerate. Growing electricity demand from solar, wind, energy storage systems, and data centers is making grid expansion, substation upgrades, and associated transmission facilities key investment areas in multiple markets.
The International Energy Agency's Global Energy Review 2026 shows that global renewable energy capacity additions reached approximately 800 GW in 2025, setting another record. Solar PV accounted for more than three-quarters of new capacity. Global battery energy storage additions grew by about 40% year-on-year, reaching nearly 110 GW, making it one of the fastest-growing power technologies.
Meanwhile, insufficient grid access capacity is becoming a major constraint on new renewable energy projects. Currently, more than 2,500 GW of renewable energy, large-scale electricity consumption projects, and storage projects are waiting for grid connection. The IEA estimates that to meet growing electricity demand before 2030, global annual grid investment needs to increase by about 50% from the current level of approximately $400 billion.
Grid and energy storage expansion broadens fastener applications
From the fastener supply chain perspective, the growth of grid expansion and energy storage projects is expected to drive demand for the following products:
High-strength hex bolts with matching nuts, flat washers, and spring washers;
Anchor bolts, chemical anchors, and expansion anchors for equipment bases and steel structure installation;
Flange bolts, U-bolts, and self-drilling screws for solar mounting systems, storage racks, and cable trays;
Hot-dip galvanized fasteners and corrosion-resistant stainless steel fasteners for outdoor transmission facilities;
Non-standard connectors and special-size fasteners produced according to customer drawings.
These products are widely used in transmission towers, substation steel structures, energy storage containers, battery racks, equipment mounting bases, cable trays, and supporting facilities for solar and wind power.
Project procurement focuses more on quality stability
Power and energy storage projects typically operate outdoors for long periods, and fasteners may be exposed to rain, humidity, temperature differences, vibration, and corrosion. Therefore, in addition to price, buyers will focus on material, mechanical properties, coating thickness, thread accuracy, and dimensional consistency.
For high-strength bolts, choose 8.8, 10.9, or 12.9 grade products according to project requirements; for outdoor steel structures, choose electro-galvanized, hot-dip galvanized, Dacromet, or stainless steel materials based on the service environment. At the same time, traceability of production batches, raw materials, heat treatment, and inspection records will become important requirements for engineering orders.
Fastener companies face new market opportunities
The IEA expects that global renewable electricity generation will continue to grow rapidly by 2030, and the share of solar and wind in the global power mix will continue to rise. As more renewable projects enter construction and grid connection stages, supporting grids, storage equipment, and installation structures will also need to be expanded.
For fastener manufacturers and exporters, this means not only a potential increase in order volumes but also higher requirements from customers for product performance and supply capability. Suppliers that can provide stable materials, reliable surface treatment, complete inspection records, customized packaging, and non-standard production services will be better positioned to participate in power, renewable energy, and storage projects.
In the coming period, high-strength bolts, anchor bolts, U-bolts, flange bolts, expansion anchors, threaded rods, and matching nuts and washers are expected to remain fastener products worth focusing on in the new energy infrastructure sector.
