Cross Dowel Barrel Nut
transverse threaded connection; barrel and hole position by drawing

A cross dowel barrel nut sits in a matching bore while a connector bolt enters its transverse threaded hole. This form is common in knock-down furniture and panel joints. Barrel diameter, length and the position of the cross-hole determine whether the bolt can align with the thread.
Dimension the cross-hole position
Show the distance from the threaded-hole axis to the end face, thread diameter and pitch, barrel outside diameter and tolerances. Identify any end alignment slot, axial hole or additional cross-holes separately. The different forms pictured should not be treated as interchangeable parts.
Check alignment before tightening
The barrel bore and bolt passage need to align so the bolt can engage normally. Forcing a bolt through an offset connection can damage the thread or panel. In wood and engineered board, the joint design should also establish panel thickness, edge distances and bolt length.
RFQ details
Send the dimensioned drawing, mating bolt, panel material, quantity and requested nut material and finish. Unlike a threaded insert for wood, a barrel nut receives a bolt across its cylindrical body. Actual dimensions, material and inspection requirements are confirmed against the enquiry.
